The Path between the Seas

The day will start with an introduction to the Panama Canal from the top of Ancon Hill from where you will enjoy impressive views of the Pacific Ocean’s entrance to the canal, the mega port of Balboa, Miraflores locks and Panama City.  From Ancon Hill you will drive to the Panama Canal visitors’ center at Miraflores for an up-close view of the locks operation.  Here you will see how ships in transit are raised and lowered in a system of locks chambers which has been operating in pretty much the same way for 100 years since the canal was inaugurated on August 15, 1914.  The visitors’ center has a state of the art museum with exhibits depicting aspects related to the Panama Canal’s history, its engineering, its contribution to world commerce and communication and about the waterway’s current expansion project which is due to be completed in the first half of 2015.

You continue on a drive across the Isthmus of Panama to the Caribbean province of Colon.  The drive is 80 kilometers long.  In about 1 hour you will have crossed the continent, from ocean to ocean. From the vantage point of an observation deck you will have the opportunity of viewing the assembly of one of the new sets of locks being built as part of the project.

The return to Panama City will be aboard the Panama Canal Railroad train. The railway follows a similar route as the original train built to transport gold prospectors, the 49ers, in the mid to late 1800s coming from the east coast of the United States across the Isthmus of Panama to continue their journey by steamboat to California.

This exciting package includes:

Transfer provided by proffessional tour guide of Ancon Expeditions, the only Virtuoso agent in Panama.

Discover Panama's History & Culture

This exciting package lets you experience the historical and cultural essence of Panama, a country that for many years has been considered “bridge, haven and door” as the poet Demetrio Korsi wrote. Three nights at the renowned Bristol hotel located in the vibrant capital Panama City with visits to the Canal, the colonial quarter and the ancient Camino Real are complemented by a stay on the Azuero Peninsula – wellspring of Panama’s culture and folklore.

6 Days / 5 Nights Panama Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Panamá

Upon arrival to Panama’s Tocumen International Airport, a representative of Hotel Bristol will pick you up and transfer you to your Panama City Hotel.

Panama City is the perfect base to explore the entire country. The city itself offers a great variety of attractions such as colonial ruins, green parks, museums, an impressive skyline of modern skyscrapers and an excellent infrastructure of hotels, restaurants, convention centers and banks.

Overnight at Hotel Bristol, Tower Executive Room, breakfast included.

Day 2: Panama City & The Panama Canal

Today, your guide will take you on a fascinating tour of Panama City’s best sites.

You will start the day in Panama Viejo, the Old Panama. Panama Viejo was the first European settlement on the Pacific coast of the Americas.

You will then continue to Panama City’s colonial quarter, the Casco Antiguo. The Casco Antiguo is a calm neighborhood with a lot of charm left. It is marked by its narrow streets and lovely two- and three-story buildings with beautifully decorated balconies.

From the Casco Antiguo you will continue with your guide to the Amador Causeway, a road that connects three Islands in the Pacific Ocean and offers magnificent views on the Canal on one side and on the skyline of Panama City on the other side.

A traditional lunch will be served in a Panamanian restaurant on the causeway.

After lunch the tour continues to the Ancon Hill. The Ancon Hill is a hill with an elevation of 199 meters above sea level located on the outskirts of Panama City.

The last stop of the day will be held at the Miraflores Locks to see the huge vessels transiting the Panama Canal. The Visitor Center will give you a good idea about history, construction and operation of the Canal – a masterpiece of engineering which was inaugurated exactly 100 years ago.

Overnight at Hotel Bristol, Tower Executive Room, breakfast included.

Day 3:  Camino Real – Conquistadors, Gold & Pirates

Visit the original cobblestones of the legendary Camino Real, experience history and get in contact with communities who strive for cultural & eco-tourism to improve their livelihood and conservation of the surrounding Chagres National Park.

Your guide will pick you up in the morning and take you from Panama City to Madden Lake. Here, you will boat out in dugout boats, observing the rain forests of Chagres National Park on the lake’s shore, which are vital for the conservation of the Canal watershed, and drinking water of Panama City. You will visit a well- preserved section of the Camino Real before continuing to the rural community of Quebrada Ancha.

Around noon you will have a delicious lunch and a presentation of traditional dances by the community of Quebrada Ancha.

Overnight at Hotel Bristol, Tower Executive Room, breakfast included.

Day 4:  Badajoz’s Route

Today you will be transferred from Panama City to the Azuero Peninsula, Panama’s cultural heartland, following the footsteps of the Conqueror Gonzalo de Badajoz. Badajoz was sent out by the Spanish Crown in 1515 to conquer Central Panama. On his way from Panama City towards Natá and the Azuero Peninsula, Badajoz faced heavy resistance by the Indian Chief Paris who defeated the Spanish, reclaiming the largest treasure obtained in America until that moment.

Discover the indigenous heritage and the Spanish influence by visiting the archaeological site of El Caño – described as “Panama’s Eldorado” by National Geographic Magazine thanks to its extremely valuable treasures found in this indigenous burial sites; and get to know one of the oldest churches on the American Continent: Santiago Apóstol in Natá. You will then continue to the historical village of Parita.

Parita is known for its charming church, the traditional houses and the main plaza which is unique in Panama and is – still today – used for the Panamanian version of non-deadly bullfights.

After the tour you will continue to Chitré in order to check-in at your hotel for the next two nights.

Cubitá Boutique Resort & Spa welcomes you to the Azuero Peninsula offering a completely authentic Panamanian experience.

Overnight at the Cubitá Boutique Resort & Spa, Standard Room, breakfast included.

Day 5:  Made in Herrera & Azuero’s Folklore

After breakfast your guide will pick you up and take you on a full-day tour to discover the Azuero Peninsula and its cultural and historical heritage.

The Azuero Peninsula is a large peninsula in southern Panama, surrounded by the Pacific Ocean.

In the morning discover the manufacturing process of the traditional products of the Herrera Province: sugarcane, salt, clay and bread. Experience the many uses of sugarcane – from refreshing sugarcane juice called “Guarapo”, traditional cooking of sugarcane honey to the production of artisanal sugarcane liquor; see the extraction of salt from the Pacific Ocean; visit the production of handmade clay pottery; and learn how the famous La Arena bread is baked.

At noon, you will enjoy a traditional lunch at a “Fonda”, a local restaurant. Here, you can taste authentic dishes of the Azuero Peninsula. Try lechona (suckling pig), torrejitas de maíz (corn rolls), carimañolas (yucca rolls) or tamales (corn dough with chicken or meat, cooked in a banana leaf) among other Panamanian specialties.

In the afternoon you will learn why Azuero is considered by many “the cultural heart of Panama”.

Overnight at the Cubitá Boutique Resort & Spa, Standard Room, breakfast included.

Day 6:  Departure from Panama

After breakfast you will be transferred to the Tocumen International Airport for your departure flight, approximately 4 hours from Chitré.
